This seminar will focus on discourses of inclusion and exclusion by focusing on hybrid ethnic identity construction in oral recordings with members of the Greek Cypriot community in North London. The seminar will highlight the complexities of self- and other-identification and belonging of members of a heritage community in the UK and points towards the long-term existence of issues of belonging with heritage communities in the UK in light of the more overt rise of anti-immigration sentiments since the EU referendum. The discussion on issues of inclusion and exclusion is also done in light of Bassel’s (2017) discussion on the importance of ‘listening’ as a social and political process. She explains that ‘the politics of listening can disrupt power and privilege and harmful binaries of ‘Us and Them’, with the aim of political equality’ (Bassel, 2017, p. 1).
